Lyle Bongé is not well-known these days, but in 1974 the Jargon Society published his book The Sleep of Reason, possibly the first non-pornographic photobook specifically on the subject of New Orleans Mardi Gras.
At the time of this writing, half a century later, there are few, if any, books that tackle the same subject in the same way. Puzzling, for when it comes to surreal, over-the-top visual culture, Mardi Gras is still about as good as it gets.
