I credit John Heartfield's series of book cover illustrations for the novels of social activist writer Sinclair Lewis as a prime motivator for my interest in the connection between notable photographs and book covers, leading to this collection and website. Who knows how Heartfield, so fervently anti-Nazi that he anglicized his name, would have felt about having one of his photomontages on the cover of a Dictionary of the Third Reich. KB
