Notes
Since its initial publication in 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic, 'The Great Gatsby' has probably appeared in hundreds of editions, each with a different cover. Very few of these covers have been photographic, and those few that have seem to be gauzy, pastel-palette depictions of Robert Redford look-alikes.
The designer who put this cover together deserves more than the anonymity bestowed upon him or her by Penguin publishers. The Jazz Age fashion shot by George Hoyningen-Huene gives the cover a stark, factual elegance which seems to be lacking in many of its over-romanticized brethren. The beauty of this cover resides in the fact that the image, while graphically compelling and a bit surreal, can also be imagined as Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, staring blankly out at the Long Island Sound from West Egg.
