The actual cover image here was made by Jill Greenberg; possibly a double exposure, but probably a projection, combining a male nude and a detail of Thomas Eakins' 'The Swimming Hole' 1883-5 (a painting which itself derived from a series of Eakins' own photographs). The homoerotic nature of both painting and photographs is representative of the novel's content. KB
