In researching Weegee's image of actress and gossip columnist Hedda Hopper, I realized that the picture on the cover of 'Halo in Blood' is actually a variation, only slightly different from image which is usually reproduced. I mention this because Hopper's expression naturally makes one think Weegee took the picture spontaneously. But for him to get (at least) two almost identical versions, Hopper would almost certainly have to be posing. In any case, the image works as a cover because the woman (aka Hopper) looks like she's screaming, her hat resembles a halo, and the pinkish graphics conjure up both femininity and blood. Weegee's photograph captured the two (already captured by police), after some drunken but relatively harmless antics ended in assault. <br />The beauty of a good photograph, in this case, is that it can present as a stark surrealistic mystery and still be newsworthy enough to make page 6 of the Daily News. We are intrigued and puzzled by its Rorsach-like symmetry while knowing it is two men hiding behind their hats in the cold metal cell of a paddy wagon. Weegee's photo is enigmatic and graphic enough to serve as the cover image for a mystery, a book of poetry and a history of tough guys and criminals. <br />In the book <em>Seven Slayers</em>, we find an example of collaboration between publisher, designer and photographer. Both parts were reproduced on the front and back covers of 'A Portrait is Not a Likeness', issue 29 of 'Archive'; the house publication for The Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona. This catalog (the title is from a quote by Richard Avedon) explores recent and alternative approaches to the portrait and self-portrait, taken from CCP's collection. Weems' approach can certainly be considered 'alternative'; both photographs are embedded in resin, in the centers of ornate ceramic plates. CCP director Terrence Pitts mentions Weems' diptych in the catalogs introduction: Another work that maintains a defiant attitude toward portraiture is Carrie Mae Weems' two-part self-portrait “one a frontal view of her face and the other a view of the back of her head" suggesting that the front of a head is no more informative than the back. Someone should have informed Pitts that the piece is not self-portraiture, and the woman in the photographs is not the artist.
