As psychologically complex as it is visually straightforward, 'Widower' depicts a middle-class, middle-aged German man and, presumably, his two sons. In contrast to their father's orotund physique, both boys are thin, forlorn and pale to the point of anemia. In Sander's photograph, the man is looking toward the taller boy, while the other, ignored, turns his hopeless gaze to the camera. The image is a good choice for Dayan's novel, which tells the story of a man forced by the Nazis to choose the life of one of his sons over the other. Glaser has taken artistic license, however, by making the father thinner and more of an aristocrat. Additionally, and more important, the subtleties of interaction and expression are lost, and the personalities of all three individuals have virtually disappeared. In reducing the specificity of the photograph, Glaser's drawing has also taken away much of its life. The wasting condition that is all too familiar to us today had just appeared on the public's radar in 1983, as a result of its role in the death of pop singer Karen Carpenter the same year. Whatever the case, Dot-Lady, Wisconsin serves as an intriguing and eerie visual metaphor for Leslie Heywood's book; a postmodern mix of memoir and criticism concerning the portrayal of Anorexia in modern society. <br />To create this image, Thorne-Thomsen probably made an exposure of a rocky beachscape with her pinhole camera and then poked holes in the paper negative, approximating the shape of a human figure. Formally, the holes create a spatial disconnect between something that is there and something that isn't, or perhaps a form in the process of coalescing or disintegrating. The figure can either be seen as emerging from the rocky beach (reminiscent of Bill Brandt's nudes from the coast of France) or as particles pouring onto the ground. <br />In terms of the book's content, the holes lend the figure a porous, even hollow quality, metaphorically consistent with the loss of weight, self-image and even life associated with the disease. <br />Thorne-Thomsen's original is brownish in tone. The cover's blue coloring, presumably the choice of the designer, offers a visual counterpoint to the author's name in red type. This rectangle of image is now a component in an overall reductive, abstract design, reminiscent of Bauhaus formalism.<br /><br />Compare the visual metaphor created by Thorne-Thomsen image with that of André Kertész, used on the cover of a book about similar subject matter, found <a href="https://coveringphotography.bc.edu/items/show/7034"><em>here</em></a>. Though the strategies they used, toned printing-out paper, cliché-verre, composite imagery, were not new, the way they used them was. One might suggest that they broke almost every rule in the modernist photographic book, written over sixty years by the likes of Adams, Weston, Cartier-Bresson, Evans and, of course, John Szarkowski. Like a couple of spiteful teenagers, the Starns thumbed their noses at traditional standards of camera vision and the fine photographic print. Their subject matter was mundane; their technique, by any conventional measure, abysmal. They all but destroyed their film and paper by staining, scratching, cutting and creasing, then cobbled together the results with nails and scotch tape, as if they were creating photographic equivalents of Frankenstein's monster. What they wound up producing, however, were photographs that were also objects, and quite striking objects at that. No longer the standard rectangular 'window', the Starn's photographic pieces had a physical presence; scratches and stains became lines and marks, creases and folds became facets and planes. Even the installation of the work; salon-style, using varying sizes, ornate frames, plywood mounts, plexi glue-gunned to the fronts, was completely antithetical to the traditional straight line of single images in unobtrusive mattes and frames. 'Rose', on the cover of two books in this collection, is a fairly large piece, roughly five by six feet. For the novel 'Deep in the Heart', the relationship between cover image and book content seems more direct than for 'The Complete Perfectionist'.
